A Year Out; Helene

One Year After Helene: How Our Association Stepped Up for Our Community

When Helene swept through Western North Carolina, the destruction left behind was overwhelming. Families were displaced, homes were damaged, and our communities faced challenges none of us could have prepared for. But in those first hours, days, and months, our association and members did what we do best—we showed up.

From the very beginning, we put boots on the ground. Our members were out in neighborhoods, cutting trees alongside first responders so families weren’t trapped in their homes. We distributed essential supplies, stood side-by-side with nonprofits, and volunteered at county resource centers to make sure those in need had access to food, water, and shelter.

As the immediate crisis gave way to long-term recovery, we shifted into advocacy and support. We hosted housing resource events, ensuring residents and contractors alike had access to information and guidance. We hosted 2 Housing Resource events, 1 in Transylvania and 1 in Henderson. We attended local government updates to keep our members informed and to represent the needs of the building community.

We also partnered with our state and national associations, working together to secure and distribute funds to members directly impacted by the storm. Through grant-writing efforts and collaboration, we were able to bring additional support to our region during this critical time.

Beyond direct relief, we also focused on healing and hope. Our Strings of Hope concert brought the community together—not only to raise funds for those affected but to remind us of the strength and resilience that exists here in Western North Carolina.

Now, as repair and rebuild efforts continue, our partnerships with nonprofits remain strong. Together, we are creating pathways for long-term recovery and building a foundation of resilience for the future.

The past year has shown us that our association is more than a network of professionals—it’s a family. We’ve proven that when challenges strike, we stand together, ready to serve both our members and our neighbors.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to supporting recovery, advocating for resources, and ensuring our industry continues to play a leading role in rebuilding stronger communities.
