The Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains (BABRM) is pleased to welcome two new members to its Board of Directors: Dakota Chapman, president of Sycamore Builders, and Hilary Merritt, design consultant with Flooring America WNC.
“We’re excited to have Dakota and Hilary joining the board,” says Megan Carroll, Executive Officer of BABRM. “Both bring thoughtful, grounded perspectives and a real commitment to collaboration. Their experience and leadership will be valuable as we continue supporting our members and the building industry across Western North Carolina.”
Dakota Chapman: Builder, Steward, Advocate
Dakota Chapman’s introduction to the construction industry came through his father, who spent his career in the field.
“While it felt almost inevitable that I would follow a similar path, it was important to me to build something of my own,” Chapman says.
After graduating from Colorado State University with a degree in construction management, Chapman launched Sycamore Builders as a small, hands-on operation focused on custom cabinetry. Now approaching five years in business, Sycamore Builders has since evolved into a full-service construction company in Brevard.
“Quality, collaboration, stewardship, and sustainability form the foundation of our company culture,” says Chapman. “These values shape how we work as a team, how we make decisions, and how we choose the clients we partner with.”
Chapman says he’s honored to join the BABRM Board of Directors and is eager to bring a thoughtful, regionally grounded perspective to the role.
“Watching other BABRM members strive for excellence and make a positive impact across our region pushes all of us in the same direction,” says Chapman. “I value strong relationships and believe that surrounding ourselves with committed, like-minded professionals elevates both our work and our community.”
Hilary Merritt: Design-Driven, People-Centered
Like Chapman, Merritt was introduced to the building industry as a kid through her father, who worked as a general contractor. She learned how to use basic tools as she took on small building projects from a young age.
“I have always loved art and design and thrived in creative spaces,” Merritt says. “I knew my professional life had to allow for creative expression in some form.”
In 2019, Merritt graduated from Western Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in business and entrepreneurship, along with coursework in interior design. That same year, she applied for a sales position at Flooring America WNC in Hendersonville.
Now working as a design consultant, Merritt focuses on making the flooring process feel approachable and straightforward.
“One of the most rewarding moments for me is hearing clients say, ‘That was much easier than I expected,’” she says. “My approach may not be traditional, but it allows me to stay true to who I am, and it’s why clients return, refer friends, and continue to trust me with their projects.”
As a new member of the BABRM Board of Directors, Merritt is looking forward to contributing in a greater capacity and supporting the association’s mission.
“My involvement with the association has shown me the value of collaboration and connection within our industry,” she says. “I hope to bring a positive, engaged perspective and help support the continued growth of our community.”
