Searching for the Right Professional

When building a custom home, remodeling, or completing a home improvement project, one of the most important decisions is picking the right professional. And finding the right one can be much easier when you ask the right questions. Geared toward custom home builders, these questions will easily work for any building professional you might need for your project.

  • How long have you been building custom homes?
  • Do you have a portfolio of completed projects? May I see some of them in person?
  • What happens if I decide to make a change to my custom home?
  • Are you available to walk a lot with me to help me determine if it’s the perfect homesite?
  • Do you offer a builder warranty in case anything breaks, stops functioning or needs repair?
  • What licenses do you have? Are you insured?
  • How will we work together? How do you communicate with me during the process?
  • Do you use sub-contractors?
  • How do you calculate the cost to build my home? And when will I know the final cost?
  • Are you familiar with the style of home we want to build? Have you built that style before?
  • Home long does it typically take your team to build a custom home?
  • How are you different from other builders? How will I benefit from working with you?
  • Do you perform quality assurance inspections during construction?
  • Do you use green building practices in your building process? What can you do to make my home as energy efficient and environmentally friendly as possible?
  • What do your past clients say about working with you? Do you have testimonials, or better still, may I speak with them? Do you have testimonials from past clients I can view?
  • Is landscaping included, or is that additional? What is required by local ordinances?
  • What is your process for picking materials, fixtures and finishes for my custom home?
