A Tribute to Jim Spicer

Jimmy Spicer Obituary - Asheville, NC | Asheville Citizen-Times

Our community has lost a foundational member, Jim Spicer. His friendliness is unparalleled. Most folks say you never saw him without a smile on his face. It is hard to talk to someone in the AHBA, let alone in Asheville that didn’t know Jim Spicer. His warm, kind and inviting spirit made each person feel important, made them feel valued.

Jim was the person who helped others get invested in the AHBA. Many members told us stories of his ability to invite you to a meeting and be social while also taking the time to create genuine connections. He was always professional, but fun. He made space for each person he met. Many folks around here considered him to be a dear friend. Our friends over at Builders Mutual are some of those folks and we asked them to share a bit with us.

At Builders Mutual, we were extremely sad to hear of Jim Spicer’s passing.  For years, Jim and Math Insurance Agency have been valued partners of ours, more like family and certainly friends.  As Al Sartain, Western NC Territory Manager reflects, “A trip to the Math Agency in Asheville has always been one of my favorite agency visits.  Mainly because you knew Jim would be sitting just inside the door with a big smile and a warm handshake.  His laugh was contagious and no matter what mood you were in when you arrived, he guaranteed you would be laughing when you left.”  Al continues, “Jim was just an all-around good guy, good ambassador for the insurance and homebuilding industries, and great representative for Builders Mutual.  He’ll be deeply missed.”

Brad Moock, VP of Business Development remembers, “Jim was one of the first agents I met when joining Builders Mutual in 2006.  He was as warm and friendly as anyone I have ever met, and always wanted to take time just to talk.  I am so glad I got to spend time with him last November in his office.  A knowledgeable insurance man, he built a great agency that has been a longstanding supporter of Builders Mutual and the local construction industry.  On behalf of the entire Builders Mutual organization, we extend our sincere sympathy to his family, staff, customers, and friends.  We will miss him.”  Yes, we will miss our friend, Jim Spicer, very much.

We are saddened to lose Jim and his compassionate spirit. We are thinking of his family during this time and hope that you will take a moment to show them some love and kindness. A memorial service will be planned at a later date. We are very blessed to have had such a warm ambassador for the AHBA.
