Greetings!
Wow, what a great Golf Tournament! With beautiful weather, great sponsors, and plenty of good “friendly” competition, the 28 teams that competed in our annual golf tournament this year couldn’t ask for much more. Big thanks to all of the sponsors and those who volunteered to help make this event a success.
The AHBA has officially launched a brand new program, the “Asheville Home Builders Playhouse Showdown,” a joint effort with the Buncombe County High Schools. Our goal is to create a real world collaborative project were AHBA mentors help each school obtain materials, design, build and market a playhouse within a limited time period and within very specific parameters. Many building industry related programs at our local high schools have suffered severe budget cuts. The AHBA Playhouse Showdown will provide an opportunity for the students at each school to raise much needed funds through raffle ticket sales and make local mentoring connections in the construction industry. Students involved will gain experience working within a team consisting of students from many different departments at each school in a real world setting.
Caroline Sutton, Don Thompson, Stuart Ray and I met recently with representatives from each of our six local high schools to launch the program. I am very excited about the direction this project is going and feel it will provide great opportunities for the AHBA to further our mission of contributing to the local community. The first ever “Carolina Mountain Home Showcase” was a resounding success. Huge congratulations to our great staff that put together such an impressive event. Thanks also to everyone who volunteered time to help and those that supported us as exhibitors during this inaugural event. We had a great turn-out within this targeted audience and many of the vendors were quoted saying it was “by far the best show they had been a part of in years!” The AHBA was thrilled to unveil the 2013 Parade of Homes Magazines during this weekend as well! Perfect timing indeed for the release of this year’s magazine which includes an AHBA Member Directory!
The 2013 Parade of Homes is this month and this year’s event features an array of stellar homes and projects in our community. We’ve had an increase in entries this year, great participation in the brand new “Coming Soon” section, and a whopping 9 entries in the “Special Projects” section. I hope you are all planning to attend the Parade weekends and the Fall Gala & Awards Reception. The Parade of Homes weekends are October 13-14, 20-21, and homes are open from 12-5 p.m. all four days. Our annual Fall Gala & Awards Reception will be held on October 18th from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Crest Center and Pavilion. Tickets are $55 per person and your RSVP is required by Oct. 3rd. During this evening event we look forward to announcing the Parade of Homes Craftsmanship Winners as well as our Annual Award Winners for Builder of the Year, Associate & Affiliate of the Year and also our Career Achievement Award. You won’t want to miss this fun filled evening!
