City of Asheville Residential Permitting Guide

Our April Advanced Contractor Education (ACE) Class featured the City of Asheville’s Development Services Department (DSD) presenting on New Tools and Best Practices for Residential Permit Applications through their new Development Portal. This is a part of the new City of Asheville’s website that launched on May 1 and is still under construction. That’s right, you can now submit applications online and much more!

DSD provided insight and details on how to utilize this new portal. If you aren’t the person applying for permits, we suggest you share this information with that person and others in your office too.

Visit Develop.AshevilleNC.gov to explore for yourself!

The new portal allows you to:

  • Submit a new residential application or resubmit an existing application
  • Submit a commercial site development application
  • Apply for a trade permit
  • Pay fees
  • Pick up residential plan review comments/approved permit documents
  • Check permit status
  • Request an inspection

To make the process smoother, use DSD’s Residential Application Review Checklist to ensure you meet all application requirements before submitting. The Digital Submission Requirements for Residential Project Applications is another helpful document that explains how to use the portal, name your files, and guidelines when sizing and scaling PDFs for your application.

City of Asheville’s Development Services Department welcomes feedback from users and urges you to contact them if users have questions. Their office hours are M-F 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.
