Playhouse Showdown – Owen High School

The following is an update on the Charles D. Owen High Schools Playhouse Showdown entry. The six Buncombe county high schools will be building a 6′ x 8′ playhome to be displayed and raffled off a the Home & Garden Expo. Brandon and Kate Duinkerken of Duinkerken Homes are the mentors for Charles D. Owen High School, and this excerpt was taken from the Duinkerken Homes Blog with the writers permission:

Duinkerken Homes is proudly participating as a  builder mentor for the Asheville Home Builder Association’s Play House Showdown. On Friday, our team surprised the students at Owen High School for their framing inspection. This year, all of the Buncombe County High Schools are participating in the brand new Play House Showdown.  Each high school has been assigned to design, build and market a play house from their school, which will be displayed in April at the AHBA’s Home and Garden Expo at the WNC Ag Center. We are thrilled to be participating in this mentoring project because it directly relates to teaching those interested in our industry.

The students at Owen were excited to have the opportunity to show off their hard work to our team and were happy to hear that they passed the framing part of the inspection! Our team really enjoyed taking a few hours to answer real-life scenario questions, show the students the proper ways to use tools, and talk with them directly about what it means to have their structure “up to code.”  Stephen Walston, the Owen High School teacher we coordinate with for this project wrote a follow up email to us stating, “The fellows enjoyed having your crew here Friday. They said they felt like they got more done because they had more instruction on how to do what they were doing. Cool! Ya’ll come again any time!”
