Students begin work on 2018 Playhouse Showdown Projects
Career and Technical Education classes throughout five Buncombe County High Schools are hard at work creating projects for the 2018 Playhouse Showdown. Along side their teachers and mentors, students from AC Reynolds, Enka, Erwin, North Buncombe and Owen High Schools are learning design and implementation of a project as well as carpentry skills. Basic framing, installation of siding and roofing materials, and having ‘home inspections’ by builder mentors throughout the process help to educate students who may be interested in pursuing a building related field.

“Providing a true hands-on experience for students to build a structure from the ground up is a valuable opportunity to grow awareness of the many rewarding career paths in skilled trades that make up the building industry,” said Asheville HBA Executive Officer Christi Stokes. “It is so important to engage our youth and spark interest in the next generation of construction trade professionals who will play a key role in building and maintaining our area’s homes and community.”

This annual program is a collaborative project where students in the departments of drafting, carpentry, interior design, and marketing work together to design, build and market the playhouse. These playhouses are created from start to finish throughout the Fall and Early Spring Semester of the 2017-2018 school year.
The Asheville HBA works with its local member companies to provide both donated materials and guidance by builder mentors throughout the project. All five uniquely crafted playhouses will be on display at the Asheville Home Builders Association’s Build & Remodel Expo the weekend of February 3 & 4, 2018 for attendees to view and tour in person. Additionally, the playhouses are raffled off at the end of the Expo to five lucky winners. Pre-purchase raffle tickets here. All proceeds benefit Buncombe County’s CTE Program.
