Do you prop yourself up with fancy titles and accomplishments? Bad idea, says Inc.com columnist Jeff Haden. Here are a few tips for starting a relationship on the right foot.
- Keep it short. Brief is always best. Provide the bar minimum the other person needs to know, and let the ensuing conversation reveal more details about yourself in a natural, unforced and much more memorable way.
- Focus on the other person. The person you’re meeting is the only one who matters. Ask questions – and actually listen to the answers. The best connections never come from speaking; they come from listening.
- Context is key. Unless you’re in a business setting, your job title is irrelevant. Meeting other parents at your daughter’s school is not the time to mention that you are, in fact, the CEO of WeKickSeriousButt Enterprises.
